Originally founded as the Free Academy in 1847 and later the City College of New York, the City University of New York as we know it today was set up in 1961 by an act signed into law by Governor Nelson Rockefeller. Today, CUNY is the third largest university system in the United States. There are currently over 540,000 students enrolled in CUNY schools as well as over 6,700 staff.
